Silverlight vs Silverlight for Windows Phone

In general, Silverlight for Windows Phone is based on Silverlight 3, but there are some differences. In this article I will explain the major differences between those two frameworks and provide you with some interesting links for further research.

Restrictions¶

• Max SilverLight application size for Windows Phone 7: 2Gb
• Silverlight for WP7 applications are out of the browser applications
  

Silverlight 3 features that are in this beta release for Windows Phone 7¶

• Input
• UI rendering
• Media
• Deep Zoom (hardware acceleration for MultiScaleImage)
• Controls (more information: Control Architecture and Design for the Windows Phone including Frame and Page Navigation, Theme Integration, Base Controls)
• Layout
• Data binding (Data binding provides a simple way for Silverlight-based applications to display and interact with data)
• Isolated storage
• Networking (HttpWebRequest, WebClient)
• XAML (Extensible Application Markup Language)
• XAP packaging (XAP is a file extension for Microsoft Silverlight packages)
• XML serialization (my article about XML serialization)
• Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) (a part of the .NET Framework that provides a unified programming model for rapidly building service-oriented applications that communicate across the web and the enterprise)

• LINQ

Following features are not supported by Windows Phone¶

• Async Delegates (including BeginInvoke, EndInvoke, will throw TargetInvocationException exception)
• Constrained Execution Regions(CER)
• Some fonts are not supported
• Browser features such as HTML DOM, JavaScript
• Navigation classes: Page, Frame
